GAD Symptoms
Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is characterised by excessive and inappropriate worry that is persistent and is not restricted to particular circumstances and situations.
GAD has physical anxiety symptoms, as well as psychological symptoms. If you are suffering from GAD:
- you will often be anxious and nervous about a lot of different things;
- big and small problems in your daily life may worry you so much that you find it hard to concentrate on other things;
- you will probably realise that the amount of worry you experience is out of proportion to the potential problem;
- you may experience feelings of panic;
- you may have a number of physical anxiety symptoms including:
- motor tension (restlessness, fidgeting, tension headaches, trembling, inability to relax);
- apprehension (worry about future, feeling ‘on edge’, difficulty concentrating);
- autonomic over-activity (light-headedness, sweating, tachycardia, epigastric (stomach) discomfort, dizziness, dry mouth).
Unfortunately, anxiety symptoms often go unnoticed but generalised anxiety can be treated effectively with medicine and psychotherapy.
