Treatment
If you were concerned that you or someone close to you was ill, what would you do?
• Wait until it passes?
• Tell them to pull themselves together?
• Suggest they see a doctor?
Fortunately most people go to the doctor sooner or later. Unfortunately, many people wait too long before seeking help and this delays recovery and may have serious consequences.
Often, family and friends are the first to notice the symptoms of depression.
The treatment of depression has greatly improved over the years, and there are many different treatment options available today. Read more about treatment here.
A doctor will be able to assess you for depression, suggest appropriate treatment and even provide professional support and help for personal, social and other problems.
The earlier you seek help the better. Treatment may include medication, talking therapy or a combination of both of these. Your doctor will recommend the best treatment for you.
Do not stop your treatment too soon
Surveys have shown that less than half of patients prescribed an antidepressant complete four weeks of treatment and more than half are still depressed when they stop their treatment.
Discontinuing your medication without the advice of your doctor is not a good idea. It may cause uncomfortable discontinuation effects and may also predispose you to risk of a relapse of your depression. About 12% of people who have suffered from depression will have recurring depression.
Make sure you talk to your doctor before stopping your medication.
