Spirituality
Spirituality is an important issue for many people. Depression is an illness that raises many existential issues and brings many difficulties in terms of how you view life and your God.
We are not here to provide spiritual guidance but rather to encourage you to remember this area as it may be a valuable source of support and guidance for you at a very difficult time of your life.
First and foremost it is important to get medical treatment for depression. This being said, it is also important to request, if appropriate for your circumstances, that your spiritual and/or cultural beliefs be taken into consideration when undergoing treatment.
You may have thoughts about God, such as: "I am being punished for...", which may be easier to discuss with your minister, priest, rabbi or spiritual leader. Remember that although your spiritual advisor may offer much support and guidance, many spiritual advisors do not have formal training in psychotherapy or the diagnosis of psychiatric disorders.
Issues of Faith
A major problem faced by people who are actively involved in a church or a spiritual body is temporary loss of faith. For a time, depression may undermine your faith but with treatment this will change. Many people find that as the depression improves, their faith regains strength.
