Mania

People who have bipolar disorder (manic-depressive disease) suffer from both depression and mania or hypomania. During manic episodes, elevation in mood can be seen in symptoms including:

  • exaggerated good mood
  • racing thoughts
  • rapid and excessive speech
  • increased energy and activity
  • increased self confidence and self esteem
  • irritability or aggressiveness
  • reduced need for sleep and food
  • increased sex drive
  • reduced concentration and attention
  • difficulty planning and or organising things
  • poor judgement
  • impulsive behaviour, e.g. excessive spending which is later regretted
  • psychotic symptoms e.g. hallucinations
  • disinhibited and/or irresponsible behaviour

Hypomania

Hypomania is characterised by milder manic symptoms. If you are hypomaniac, your mood is elevated and you may experience:

  • increased activity
  • restlessness
  • pressured or excessive speech
  • increased spending
  • Increased libido
  • decreased requirement for sleep

You can appear to be communicative but may actually be confused and unable to concentrate.
