Pain

Pain and tiredness are common symptoms. One third of all adults will complain of pain. Around 4% have acute pain that lasts for more than a week.
Sometimes pain can be the most prominent symptom of depression.

Patients with chronic pain have an increased risk of suffering from depression, regardless of the cause of the pain. Approximately half of all pain patients have depressive symptoms and approximately one third are suffering from depression.

Chronic pain increases the risk of developing depression significantly. But studies have also shown that you have an increased risk of getting a chronic pain condition later on in life if you have had depression.

Depression and a chronic pain condition have a number of common features. Some antidepressants may also have a beneficial effect on certain forms of pain - even in the absence of major depression.
