Subject: Why do i feel like i do?
Hi,
I would like to know if depression is responsible for how i feel and the stupid thoughts i think.
I feel happy one minute then sad the next, the mood changes come on so suddenly and for no reason.
Also, why is it that when i'm sitting down to watch my favourite t.v programme that i cant even pay attention to it anymore?
Sure i'm watching whats on the screen but my thoughts are of stupid things like stabbing myself with a nice sharpe kitchen knife.
Driving in the car is crazy too cause as i'm driving along, my mind wanders else where instead of on what i should be paying attention too.
I've come so close to having accidents cause all i'm thinking about is how fast i need to be going and and what angel i need to hit the pole in order to do a proper job of myself.
Nearly every thought is of self harm and their not scary either, i actually get excited with the thoughts of suicide...
Does this mean i'm totally crazy, totally mad in the head or what?

If your symptoms have been present for a very long time, that is, for years, it is likely that you have what unhelpful personality traits that include marked moodiness, impulsivity and suicidal thinking. If your symptoms are not typical of how you have been most of your life, they are most likely to be due to a depressive disorder. I would advise that you consult your general practitioner as soon as possible to discuss these issues, and would recommend that you request referral to either your local mental health service or a psychiatrist, for a comprehensive assessment.
If you are using alcohol, caffeine, or illegal drugs, I would advise reducing and then stopping these over several days, alcohol or illegal drugs can cause all of the symptoms you mention in your request.
Depending on the type of condition you are thought to have, the doctor may prescribe either medication, psychotherapy or both. A health professional will need to monitor your condition and treatment once it has begun. Additionally, your doctor may organise for you to have blood tests or a CT scan.
If at any stage, you reach a stage where you are feeling so suicidal that you cannot guarantee your own safety, please ask someone close to you for assistance, and also call your local hospital and ask to be put though to the mental health emergency line (sometimes referred to as 'Mental Health Intake'). This can occur at any time of the day. If it is difficult to get through, and you are feeling suicidal, please call 000.
