The black wave hits me
Its power overwhelms
I am tossed and turned
I run out of breath
I give into its dark inky embrace
Then there is air and light
I can breath
I can see the shore
The promise of safety
But here it comes again
Taking my feet from beneath me
Dragging me back
Into its dark painful heart
Once again I succumb
Its power all consuming
Only to rise again into the light
I wave to the shore
And cry out for help
And a line is tossed
I grip it firmly in both hands
I feel it burning my palms
This pain is almost pleasure
I am pulled a little closer
The shore is clearer
But the dark ocean
hasn’t done with me yet
I continue to be pulled back
Pulled under
Struggling to take each breath
My hands burning, stinging
Aching to release this rope
But it is my lifeline
It is my hope
It is my shining torch
As I get dragged
Down again and again
Two steps forward
One step back
