Down in the dumps

Hi all,

I'm feeling very depressed today, I've just got back from seeing my GP after she called me in to discuss results of recent blood test.

My throid is continuing on a downward slide, so have to up the thyroxine again, which is 1 of the reasons I've been feeling so tired lately. The other reason is my liver function, it's through the roof and that's after not touching a drop of alcohol for 8 weeks and having the test before I had 3 last friday night. It was high last time I had a test and I had expected it to have come down after being so good, not for it to have gone up by as much as it has.

GP seems to think the naltrexone I'm taking to stay off the grog is affecting my liver, so she's ringing my psychiatrist to see if he thinks its a good idea if I come off of it. I'm going to come off it anyway, regardless of what they say, I know I've got my problem with alcohol under control now, I've proved it to myself.

Just so terribly disappointed with the result after all the had work I've put in in the last 9 weeks. And oh so tired, I just feel so tired all the time. Was worried the depression was making a resurgence, but according to the GP the way I'm feeling at the moment is completely normal for someone with my thyroid and liver problems.

Only got 1 liver, I hope it gets better soon.

Karen

Hi,

Aww honey I have felt that feeling of defeat after trying so hard and to find little change as a result. Thi funny thing about life is that when change in anything occurs it usually gets worse before it gets better!

Please don't lose hope and keep all your hard work up, it's very encouraging for me to read your success with coping with alcohol, it truely makes me believe I too can control my habit before it gets worse again and I'm only 20.

I hope you feel better tomorrow as for today just rest, watch a dvd or something. I hope your liver gets better soon too.

Hey Karen,

what is it about Drs they can reallly bring you down. Sounds like you are getting to the bottom of things at least. Give it a little more time to see what will be happening.

You have amazing strength and insight and now you just need a little faith to get through this and sort it out.

The alcohol not changing the liver test is interesting but as you say there are other reasons for this, just need the results and you can get a clear picture and do whats needed.

For now though it sounds like you need to rest up a bit, put your feet up and let those around you look after you.

Hopet o catch you in chat later and see how this afternoon has gone for you, take care, give yourself the time adn chance to recoer from the physical stuff and hopefully the emotional stuff will follow suit.

Kindest regards

Liz

Naltrexone can cause elevation of levels in the liver. However, with or without naltrexone it takes 3 months for liver levels to normalise. Depending how far your level has come up you should maybe go off it. Obtain Medical advice for that one then make your decision.
Fly, it bothers me that you think you have control over alcohol at this point. Please be careful.

Fly

Can relate to the poor thyroid and thyroxine everyday.

The liver, well that can be different things. Mine is because I am overweight and it is fatty because of that. Don't stop the medication until you have heard from the gp as it might not be the medication affecting the liver - good on you for 9 weeks of no drinking. It could be related to weight, lifestyle, binge eating, many things. Speak to the gp and see what the blood tests said - is it the med - as they seem to think or could it be lifestyle???

Go Fly!!!

Karen

I hope you get your thyroxine levels right... i take 2x50mcg on even days and 3x50mcg on odd days... seems to have levelled the readings ... suppose i need another blood test soon... been a while... watch you get your thyroid levels right... too much and that is a disaster and too little and oh so tired and depression...

As for the drinking... no alcohol is still probably the best... as maple said 3 months for liver function ...

anyway sorry you are feeling so tired and disappointed... get the thyroid levels right and you should soon feel much better...

you give so much support to others online ... thank you

take care

Fly

You sound down hearted. Just because there is a problem with the liver is no reason to feel down hearted. You have made 9 weeks not drinking and that is a success. Liver problems can be from weight, medications - as you have been told - hope you don't have to stop the anti drinking med because it is obviously helping you keep the demon drink under control and you need to remember that achievement. Why doctors can't talk to one another when prescribing meds so they are aware of what each is prescribing and there should be no problems. Guess though that is hard when psychiatrists specliase in psychiatric illnesses and gp to general medicine.

Hey Karen,

Thanks for your comment on my diary, you always have good comments and seem to know exactly what to say.

I'm sorry about your thyroid and liver problems, and i think going off the naltrexone is a good idea. I still wish i had your faith in life, i am well and truly struggling with it.

You have done so well sating off the grog for so long and i am so very proud of you. Even having a few drinks last week, i don't think will affect you, you are a very strong person.

Take it easy and do what the Docs suggest.
