Is it as simple as Happiness being an Antidote to Depression?

I have been reading a few alternative magazines/parts of books.... and I have had a few ideas - there only ideas - suggested..

Happiness is it an antidote to Depression?

So, If I continually focus / think in a negative way, I hold myself in that pattern.. of negativity, hence feeling depressed.

If I think thoughts based on being positive.. ie I care for my wellbeing. I am worthwhile..

I wonder if it is as simple as this? I dont think it is simple.. it seems very complex to me.

I think its important to feel our feelings and express them.. so what happens when you arent feeling good/okay/great?.. to not be honest is denial isnt it?

What do people think?
Just wondering - Thanks everyone.

In some respect I think this is generally true.

You are right about expressing our feelings but we need to do that positively and that will mean we will feel well/glad we have achieved things. If we are negative we are sick/depressed and it is hard to turn those thoughts into positive ones.

Try to be positive with your thoughts and not negative and I believe you will find a big differences - you will feel happy, content and well.

Hope you can accept this thought.

Go Blue!!!

I don't think it is that simple. Yes, having a positive outlook and attitude is far more beneficial than having a negative one, but the nature of depression is that you have a difficult time thinking positively. As such, I believe overcoming depression is much more complicated that thinking happy thoughts.

As for sharing thoughts and feelings, you are correct that it is best not to bottle things up. However, that does not mean you can jump down people's throats or lash out. If you have something you need to get out you need to do it in a positive, productive manner. Simply blurting something out or being confrontational is not acceptable.

As someone who hasn't had a depressive state of mind for a few years now, I can say that thinking positively does help, but its getting your mind to think in that way is not easy. I think a combination of effective therapy or counselling and medication is the key to getting over depression.

I'm still on medications myself, though I admit, haven't found the need to see anyone other than my psychiatrist for my deppression related problems in a long time.

Apparently Cognitive Behavioural therapy is a very good way to think in the positive way, there's some information on this site under 'help with depression' which should be a good starter.

Good luck bluefix!!~
