the metronome

A page in the diary "Meandering Thoughts"

Driving to and from work is when i do my best thinking... today I was thinking about something in the diaries... a lot of ppl talk about their mood and how it is mostly down... well i was thinking in nature there is a balance ... for every up there is a down... and i likened it to the swing of the pendulum ... constantly moving from left to right... for the clock to work the pendulum needs to swing... as I imagined the swing of the pendulum the sound of the metronome echoed in my ear... and the tempo related to the swing of our moods... fast tempo ... rapidly cycling mood swings... the pace of living with them in frenetic and crazy... overwhelming and confusing... like the sound of fast frantic music... the opposite of that tempo is the very slow tempo... the dirge ... the mood swing is slow and it takes a long time to move up... the mood feels eternal on the down... but slowly it moves upward... and it seems eternal until it swings back down again... and in the middle is a steady rhythmic beat ... a little up for a while then a little down for a while... this tempo is the natural rhythm of life... however not all will experience it... but the aim is to listen to the metronome and find your own rhythm... and learn to live with it...

take care

My brother and I have both played music since an early age - I began playing the keyboard when I was about 6 I think. We had one of those old metronomes where you slide the weight up or down to change the tempo. I hardly ever used it for practicing but used to love playing with it. I'd slide the weight all the way down to the bottom at the fastest possible tempo and set it off and stare at the frantic movement. Then I'd slide it as far up to the top as I could without pulling the weight off and set it off again. The weight would go so far to either side that it didn't look like it would have the energy to get back up. But it always did. Like our lives I suppose.

The first part of your post reminded me of something I always had to tell myself in Chemistry when working out problems - for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Like our lives too.

Very thought provoking cate...

These words you write in your diary about the mood swings compared to the swing of a pendulum, this is very true but the big thing is when your mood is low, not to give into the slow tempo but to keep the tempo to your own speed in different stratagies that you knnow to stay afloat. Very ingenious thinking cateblack, well done. Regards 2468
