The sunshine after the rain

A page in the diary "A Day in the Life Of..."

I have never in my life been so glad to be given a piece of plastic with a really crap photo on it. Yes that's right ladies and gentleman, VicRoads finally did their job and gave me my licence back (funnily enough, the letter is dated the day after the supervisors got involved). I got the letter last night but they just sent me a temporary licence because I had to go in with ID to get the proper one.

I went for a very short drive yesterday (like five minutes) then came home. Today was a busy day - psych appointment, pdoc appointment and had to get licence photo taken, so I did a lot of driving. I settled back in very quickly - has been over 5 months since I've driven, but it was like riding a really big, expensive bike. A few road users nearly caused heart attacks but I'm home in one piece as is my car, so that's good.

This afternoon I am going back to skating - finally. In 2006 my doctor found I had stress fractures in my knee and that I would have to have surgery. I had the surgery in July of last year and had part of my knee cap removed. I did the rehab diligently and finally got the all clear to back to skating in November. It was SO good to be back on the ice, but Mum couldn't take me regularly (the rink is a long way away) so I decided I'd wait till I had my licence back and could skate as much as I wanted to. Guess where I'm going tonight? I'm SO excited!

I don't think anyone can possibly understand what skating means to me - its a place where nothing else matters. It's just me, my skates and the ice. The rink is noisy and often crowded, but the people disappear, the noise becomes distant and my soul becomes peaceful. It is like I have been set free, and it makes me so happy. Before I injured myself I skated 5 days a week and did off ice training at least 2-3 times a week. When I had to stop skating cause of my fractures, I nearly died - skating isn't a sport for me, it is life. The fact that I get to stick it to everyone who said I wouldn't be back is just an added bonus :D

Who knew a licence could make everything seem so much better?

Hey Babzy

It is lovely to read a positive entry. Wonderful that you got your licence back - I can imagine very liberating.

No - I haven't felt that feeling with skating...my memories of ice skating are in Switzerland on holiday as a kid outdoors and falling over and my sunglasses breaking and ending up with a big black eye!! But..I have felt that feeling with other things...although not for a long time.

Babzy, I know you don't always believe in yourself - but I found your diary very inspirational. Keep looking on the bright side.

Lots of love

Kimberly

Hey Babz,
YAY! Yes, I think I at least partially get what skating is for you, for me that is theatre - it's like none of the bad stuff exists anymore, its just me and whatever I am doing, just me and the words, or just the character - everything else fades...
Big Hugs
A
