ANTI-DEPRESSANTS NO HELP

A page in the diary ""

This is an article published today in the Sydney Newspaper MX News:

"New Generation anti-depressants are largely a waste of time, researchers said today. A review of clinical trials found they worked no better than a placebo for mildly depressed patients and for most people suffering severe depression. Dr Tim Kendall, deputy director of the ROYAL COLLEGE OF PSYCHIATRISTS RESEARCH UNIT (UK), said the findings were "fantastically important".
Experts analysed 47 clinical trials of four commonly-used anti-depressants"

It doesn't state which anti-depressants were tested. I'm sending an email to the College to find out (Enquiries@cru.rcpsych.ac.uk). I'll let you guys know as soon as I find out.

Sorry guys, I know this article might be discouraging, but it's better that we know the truth so we can consider other options (or medication).

Cheers

Don't always believe things you read. Find out what you can but people don't go off your a/d on the basis of one article.

The anti-depressants referred to are SSRIs. The full story can be googled up on The Times of London web site. My comment: May be so; maybe not so. There are tens of thousands of academics around the world busily writing research reports to maintain their academic standing. No doubt much good work is being done, but???
(hello everyone)

Might be better to try TimesOnline

Thanks surfer for pointing me to the article. It can be found here: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/health/article3434486.ece

I've read it and agree with you...maybe yes or maybe no.

I've been on Efexor XR 150mg for 2 years now and I'm sceptical about wether they are actually making a difference or is it just me becoming more mature combined with counselling sessions.

Who knows? I certaintly don't! Will I ever know? Who knows? Nobody knows!

The meds and counselling sessions work hand in hand and help with your treatment. As I said don't always believe in what you read - tomorrow someone will write there is no problems with a/d, especially ssri's which most deppies take.

I have read enough good and bad articles about a/d to be weary of anything written because one day it is all gloom and doom and the next it is all hunky doory. Just keep taking you meds and have your counselling sessions and think of the good they are doing you. If you were feeling bad, your doctor would know and the medications would be changed.

I just saw report on the ten news (Brisbane) about the University of Hull tests of a/d. Now I don't know if this is the univeristy that the article refers to but the news report said it was important that people on a/d NOT stop them and that the test didn't review major depressive illnesses which means not all a/d were reviewed. As I said, be weary of what you read. PHD researchers have to bring money into the university by their research and it seems this research if faulty as it didn't test all the a/d and didn't look at major depressive illnesses.

Thanks for sharing your concerns with deppies.
