Hey all :) I just wanted to ask all of u how do

Written by Andariel 10. Dec 2003 02:56 PM

Hey all :)
I just wanted to ask all of u how do u spend all these endless, sleepless nights.Let´´s describe how each of us spends his/her nights.Who knows?Maybe we can get ideas about how we could make time go by quicker, until the first light of the new day jumps in from our windows.

I like to listen to music.I choose the most depressing songs and i play them for hours.I spend a great deal of time in the Internet trying to find fun pages that could place a smile upon my face.

More than often i sit on my couch with a glass of vodka and re-live the past in my mind.Thinking a million times about what could i have said or done differently.I seldom cry.I used to cry at nights. Now i´´m sick of it.I can´´t even cry anymore, maybe that´´s better because i make myself believe that since i´´m not crying things must be getting better(not really, but "I want to believe..."):)

I even thought of going back to my old hobby:painting.I want to,but i just get bored at the process.Besides i have no inspiration anymore.I used to paint landscapes, flowers, lakes. It was kind of nice,i felt i was creating something beautiful.Now...nothing.

So what do u like to do at night?

Love, Andariel

Well--vodka´´s not an option for me, s

Well--vodka´´s not an option for me, since I quit drinking alcohol in 1986 (with the help of Alcoholics Anonymous), as I could tell it was killing me. I wish I could drink! But since I can´´t...

I´´ve always heard that if you can´´t fall sleep after twenty or thirty minutes, you should just get up and read or play a game or listen to music or do some other activity till you feel sleepy, then try again. I don´´t always follow that advice, but when I do it seems a lot better than lying in bed fretting.

When I can´´t sleep I will sometimes come to the computer and write, or play a game, or look at the headlines.

I generally take both melatonin and valerian extract in hopes of promoting sleep. I can´´t tell (so far) that the melatonin does any good, but valerian extract definitely makes me drowsy a good 70-80% of the time.

I´´ve suffered from insomnia as long as I can remember, and I´´m now 64 years old. At least since the onset of adolescence, I don´´t think I´´ve had more than five or six nights of sound sleep.

Proof that, normally, insomnia doesn´´t kill, I guess! But I´´m still searching for the answer, and rather doubt, at this point, that I´´ll ever find it.

(It could be relevant that, when I was hospitalized for electroshock treatment in 1973, the doctors gave up on taking an EEG reading after two attempts: my brain was so active that they could not obtain a baseline measurement. I think this is part of my insomnia problem--my brain never ever seems to let up. The best I can hope for is no racing thoughts--which occur when I´´m deeply depressed.)

insomnia- another nastie

yes I too have suffered from severe insomnia which I hate. I´´m not a pretty person without having a good nights sleep :) very ugly to be with actually!

Things I have tried in the past have been, aromatherapy -that is to burn pure essential oils in an oil burner which can be purchased from any health food shop.

Essential oils are therapeutic/medicinal but fragant oils are not and may give you a headache.

I use an electric oil burner which is safer but you can always leave your oil burner on while preparing for sleep then make sure the candle is out before dozing.

Citrus oils are very good for depression eg: lemon, grapefruit, manderin, orange, lime, also geranium. Ask at the health food shop as they deal with depression on a regular basis.

I have also started using valerian capsules which I know is yet another pill to pop but it is again natural and non habit forming.

I combine these 2 methods on a regular basis and have started wearing foam ear plugs again to block out any tiny bit of extra noise eg: snoring partner, noisy neighbors, screeching cars doing wheelies on the main road etc... yes it does help a great deal. Cheap from any chemist.

Also very beneficial has been music - I know it sounds corny to some but I go for the instrumental or sounds of nature as I find sometimes lyrics can be disturbing.

And finally yes sometimes I do enjoy that bacardi and coke but I´´m trying to get back to my herbal tea. Hope this helps.

Oh one other comfort is to let the dog curl up on the end of the bed- they are so in tune with us & seem to be aware of when we need comforting.

Finally I do believe that sometimes a damn good cry can defintely put you to sleep especially when feeling fragile & exhausted or for no other reason than because we can! We comfort ourselves in that way & it is another coping strategy that we shouldn´´t be afraid of using from time to time as no harm is done.

I enjoy red or white wine, witch I don´&acut

I enjoy red or white wine, witch I don´´t have as much. I now take 3 sleeping pills Dr. prescribed and sometimes 4 but that doesn´´t really help. Usually this works if I eat on a regually basis but my uncle is dieing and I think that I am thinking about that too much and even though I am taking the sleeping pills I still can´´t sleep. I have been going on the web looking for someone to talk to. Watching TV, at some point your body really can´´t do to much even if you want it too. I paint also. So some times if I can get it in me I can paint all night. I am trying to paint more. And music is the best my favorite song is ´´Wild Flower´´ by Skylark. I love listening to the words of music. Actually I was thinking today that I might paint an abstract to that song.
