Hi there,

I´´m looking at getting counselling for depression with either a psychologist or a counsellor (the cheaper option). I´´ve become aware that different practitioners come from different focuses, and suggest different types of therapies.

How do I know which therapy will be the most helpful for me to focus on? How do I decide who to go to? Any particular advice on the different therapies themselves?

Thanks!

most psychologists use whats called CBT (cognitive Behavioural Therapy) these days for depression. It can be useful if the depression is mild, or moderate and you have no other conditions. It has helped many. My own belief on CBT, is that when you suffer from a number of things, including generalised anxiety, or other anxiety disorders, personality disorders, ptsd or bp, it can interfere with therapy. Usually it is a quick therapy only lasting weeks, from 8-16 or so. My psychologist still tries using CBT on me, however I think she is beginning to believe me that it doesnt work for me. Other types are interpersonal therapy, DBT therapy (for borderlines) and just general councelling.
hope that helps. unfortunately I dont suffer from ordinary depression, but a number of other things, and have been in therapy nearly 3 years now. but keep persisting.
